Spring Returns to Orkney: Surveys, Sunshine & What’s Coming Next
Hi everyone, and welcome back!
I know it’s been a little while since my last update. My winter hiatus stretched on a bit longer than I had planned. But with the incredible weather we’ve been enjoying lately, there’s no doubt about it: spring has well and truly sprung here in Orkney.
Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been easing back into the fieldwork rhythm, and I couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful reintroduction. Last week, I had the absolute pleasure of heading over to Hoy to begin this year’s Breeding Bird Survey, which I’m carrying out on behalf of the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO). Hoy is always a special place to visit, but seeing it come to life again in the spring sunshine, with birds busily pairing up and territories filling with song it’s a real privilege to be part of documenting it all.
This past week has also been a busy one, as I’ve been involved in several BTO-led events for the brilliant Orkney Nature Festival. It’s been a joy to meet so many people (locals and visitors alike) who are curious about Orkney’s incredible wildlife and eager to learn more about the work that goes on behind the scenes to monitor and protect it.
The breeding season is now in full swing, and it’s always such an exciting time. From courtship displays and nest-building to the first signs of chicks later in the season, there are so many special moments waiting to be discovered across Orkney’s wild places. If you’ve never experienced the islands in spring, I really encourage you to take some time to get out and explore—you never know what surprises might be waiting just around the next headland or clifftop.
As for what’s next—there’s lots happening behind the scenes right now, and I’m very excited to share that new adventures for 2025 will be going live very soon. Whether you’re a returning explorer or someone considering their first visit, there’ll be a range of nature-focused experiences to get involved in. From guided walks to birdwatching trips and more, I can’t wait to share what’s in store.
So be sure to keep an eye on this blog and my website, and of course, follow along on Instagram for all the latest updates. I’m really looking forward to seeing many of you out and about as the season unfolds.
Until next time, enjoy the sunshine and take a moment to soak in the wonders of spring wherever you are!
